From time to time, I create power points and word documents to educate my clients about particular aspects of interior design and home construction. These help them understand each topic and help them make better decisions about what they want in their own homes.

I am publishing is about the different types, styles and treatments of ceilings. Probably more than any other element in a room, the ceiling defines and reinforces the architectural style of the space. Low ceilings create a sense of intimacy, vaulted ceilings a sense of space and grandness, panelled ceilings a sense of formality, etc. It is the one part of a room that you can’t touch or feel, it is the only element of a room that you primarily use your sense of sight to explore. It is that visual impact that makes the cathedral so impressive, the farmhouse so rustic or the living room so contemporary. The ceiling also impacts a space acoustically, reinforcing the awe, drama and functionality of the cathedral or concert hall.

I hope that this short discourse on ceilings will help you communicate a little bit better with your builder, designer or architect.
